After weeks of concerns raised by locals about the ICWD contract (that would give them rights to withdrawal raw water from Lake Adger for 50 years AND concerns that the contract was really an extended loan to the county if either party ever terminated the contract) cooler heads prevailed and the Local Government Commission (LGC) stepped in to say they would NOT approve the contract in its current form. The LGC is a state agency (not controlled by local politics) that's charter is to ensure small governments, like Polk County, don't take on more financial debt than is reasonable (even if it is buried in a water contract). Thank goodness we have such an organization in our state!
Partnering with ICWD probably IS a good idea for Polk County, but not with the terms they were presenting! Tom Pack (the new Chair of the Polk County Commissioners) wants to make this deal happen, so "they" (Marche Pittman and a few select commissioners) are traveling to Raleigh on January 8th to discuss what can be changed to make the Local Gov. Commission happy. When we get details on the mtg. or any new versions of the contract we'll be sure to post them HERE and on our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ABETTERPOLKCOUNTY
